Adventures With Whole Wheat: My Family Suffered So Yours Doesn’t Have To (Prologue)
Posted on 19. Oct, 2009 by Kate in Musings, Recipes

I stood in the bathroom hurriedly pulling half my youngest daughter’s hair into a lopsided ponytail when Nate walked in, kissed me goodbye, and said, “I don’t know what you made, but it tastes like chalk.”

Okay, they do look good. At least you bake from scratch. That is more than I do. Have a good day. It is Friday. I hope you win!!!!!!

OK, I need to hear the rest of this story. I’ve substituted half wheat in my favorite white bread recipe and not had any problems, (unless Chas just can’t tell, because it tastes better than those cookies) but now I’m afraid to try again.

I have a nice wheat bread recipe that my mom and her friend converted to a white bread recipe. It worked great for a while but the last couple time I tried to make it it just did not turn out well. At least you have the excuse of messing around with the ingredients.

Ode to Katrina’s blog
Cakes, cookies, meals galore
Books, Ranch, wait there is more
Katrina, what is there you can not do
You move pipe and even pick up the poo
Milk the cow, weed the garden, feed the chickens
Yes, you even read that book Charles Dickens
oh how the rumors are all true, you are the best
and you do all most everything with so much zest

I hope you liked my poem. I wanted to post a fun comment. I really do enjoy reading your blog. It helps me to get to know you better. I would love to read your book, when will it be published? Are you all finished. Would you like to include my poem into it. It is OK if you do, haha, just joking. But seriously I hope you win this competition.

Knowing and working with Nate I am going to give him a really hard time.
The next time you make pancakes!!! include the chalk and maybe some dirt, sand and gravel.
Whole wheat is very interesting to cook with, hats off to you for trying new things. Let me know if you come across any great recipes that include whole wheat, haven’t done so yet in my cooking career.

Growing up where my siblings and I played in the granary has made it impossible for me to eat red wheat. No matter how little was use, i can taste the granary which always smelled like mice.

If I that’s what I associated with the smell of wheat I wouldn’t eat it either.

Cooking with whole wheat is great, because it has lots of Fiber and you need 25 grams per day. If you have ever looked at how much fiber is in things it is hard to get 25 grams each day. So, by cooking with whole Wheat will up your chances of reaching 25 grams. Fiber can help reduce colon cancer, and reduce your risk of heart disease. Just a little tidbit about the nutritional value of Whole Wheat according to Food Sense at USU Extension. If you want any more information contact me at foodsanpete@gmail.com. I got a lot more where that came from.

I’m really starting to feel for poor Nate here. He makes an honest comment about some food and people want to slip him laxatives, among other things. Tsk, tsk. What’s it come to that a man can’t be honest with his wife

I’ve found that the hard white wheat doesn’t have such a strong smell or taste. I like it much better than the red wheat.

Good luck with perfecting your recipe. I find that even 1/4 white flour, 3/4 whole wheat flour goes a long way to balance out the whole wheat.

Poor Nate? What about poor Katrina? She put all that work in to make breakfast and the thanks she gets is, “It tastes like chalk”? There’s honesty, but there’s also tact…: )

I love to bake but when it comes to making wheat bread it comes out heavy and very dry. I can make rolls which are a form of bread. I just need to learn how to cook at a high altitude – I lived at sea level for awhile.

I’m always willing to try something new. My mom is teaching me to cook so I will be able to take care of myself when I graduate and move out on my own. We haven’t done homemade muffins yet, so maybe we’ll try those in the future.

Is your hubby used to whole wheat? He may just need to get used to ti. I think they look wonderful. Whole grains can be difficult to work with at first. Your family will survive.
